Seriously, where has the summer gone? I can’t believe that school is ready to start is just a few short weeks. We are starting to feel the crunch time as my son, James, prepares to start his senior year. September is going to be a big month for him. He’s starting his last cross country season and entering the school for his last “first day” and to top it off, he will be turning 18! It makes me cry just to think about it. I can remember his first day of kindergarden like it was yesterday.
As a photographer, I always want to give my clients images that stand out. New locations, different looks, capture what makes them unique. Well, I have an added pressure to deliver that same outcome with my own senior. Many months ago, I asked James if he could go anywhere to do his senior pictures, where would he want to go? I told him to think outside the box. He certainly did that! His wish was to travel to Eugene, Oregon and have his pictures taken on Hayward Field. This was not surprising at all considering how much James loves distance running. After all, Oregon is the home of Steve Prefontaine. We laughed it off and put it in the back of our minds until an opportunity presented itself to me to travel to Portland to photograph along side one of my favorite creative photographers. I thought it would be the perfect opportunity to kill two birds with one stone as the saying goes. I will be taking James out with me for a long weekend to capture his senior portraits!!! Looking forward to a little mother/son trip for his 18th birthday 🙂
Even though we are headed out west in just two short weeks, we were still able to capture some images at James’ favorite area spot! He has spent many summers running the bluffs and trails at Whitewater State Park. It was only fitting that we tackled the Dakota Trail to an awesome spot that overlooks the park and the weather was perfect for our impromptu session!
James plays percussion for the Stewartville High School Band so I also wanted to create a completely unique image showcasing that activity. I am lucky to have a studio space on-hand for whenever we want to capture a more traditional studio look. This photo is anything from traditional! I love the edgy feel!
Look for more images to come throughout the fall, especially in September when we take our trip to Oregon!
